Using asphalt has numerous benefits, the foremost being that it is less expensive than concrete. Unlike concrete, asphalt is flexible and has the ability to yield with use and slight movements of the sub-base material beneath. Concrete relies exclusively on its own internal strength to absorb loads and will crack if these tolerances are exceeded. This is why concrete will often be striped with "expansion joints" to accommodate dynamic stress without crumbling entirely.
