Having a freshly paved driveway is like having a red (OK, black) carpet leading into your home. A new driveway installed by a professional asphalt paving contractor looks great, is durable, and smooth as silk.
The vast majority of driveways are finished with either asphalt or concrete. Asphalt has a number of advantages over concrete. First, it's much less expensive - often costing up to 40% less than concrete.
Second, a good paving contractor will have a blacktop driveway laid in just a day or two, while concrete might take up to a week to get in place. And even though asphalt takes much less time to get in place, it also lasts much longer. With blacktop paving, you'll never have to worry about surface flaking or pitting like you do with concrete.
Long-term maintenance is lower, too. Over time, your asphalt driveway might start to show some cracking. No big deal. Driveway repair is easily performed by most homeowners. Home improvement stores sell inexpensive crack sealers that are effective and easy to apply.
At the same time, asphalt's natural black color is a boon in Minnesota's winters because it absorbs the sun's energy - meaning that snow will melt faster on an asphalt driveway than on a concrete one.

Asphalt or concrete removal begins with on-site excavation of the subgrade. The existing material is then replaced with proper base materials that meet all current industry standards. It is essential for the subgrade to shaped and leveled accurately, as imperfections below could translate into unwanted variations on the surface above once finished. Proper drainage is also factored into the leveling process before the subgrade is compacted. The final step involves the application of a new asphalt pad which is rolled to a flawless conclusion, both aesthetically and functionally.

If an existing, paved asphalt surface requires rehabilitation, a common method is to apply what is called an 'overlay', in essence a fresh layer of asphalt over an existing surface. Generally less expensive than complete replacement, this technique may be slightly less durable but can last for many years with proper care. This bituminous makeover involves cleaning the existing pavement, formatting the edges of the space and repairing any major fissures, voids or damage. Once the new layer of asphalt is applied, the end result looks no different than a brand new job, and will prevent further deterioration of the original condition.

Quite often, "patching" implies simply filling a hole with appropriate material and calling it a day. This is not how we "roll!" Compromised areas of a driveway or parking lot are excised in their entirety, making the forthcoming patch integrity far superior to just applying a filler. Once the target area has been excavated, filled with gravel and compacted, a new layer of asphalt is added and rolled to blend in with the remaining pavement.
